Why tweet deleters are limited to 3,200 posts

Short answer

Because X's API lists only an account's newest posts: X's developer documentation says the user posts timeline returns "up to 3,200 most recent Posts". A tool that finds your posts through that list can't see anything older. Your X archive lists every post with its ID, and a post can be deleted by ID, so uploading the archive removes the limit.

Where 3,200 comes from

X's developer documentation says the user posts timeline returns "up to 3,200 most recent Posts" (X API docs: Timelines). That timeline is how most apps list your posts, so a tool that only asks the API can't see anything older. The mentions timeline is shorter still: up to 800.

Scrolling your profile doesn't get around it either. Cyd, a free deletion app, says X stops showing everything when you scroll and recommends importing your archive for accounts with more than about 2,000 tweets (Cyd docs).

How the archive gets around it

Your X archive lists every post you have made, each with its ID. Deleting a post through X's API only needs that ID, so a tool that reads your archive can delete a post from 2009 as easily as one from today.

  1. Download your X archive.
  2. Give it to a tool that reads archives.
  3. Filter or review, then delete at X's pace: 50 posts every 15 minutes.

The limits that remain

  • Speed. X allows 50 post deletions per account every 15 minutes (X API rate limits).
  • Posts newer than your archive. Anything you posted after requesting it isn't in it; a tool picks those up through the API.
  • Posts already gone. The archive may list posts that were deleted since; deleting them again does nothing.

Questions

Why can my tweet deleter only see 3,200 tweets?

Because it lists your posts through X's API, and X's user posts timeline returns only the 3,200 most recent posts. Give the tool your X archive and it can see the rest.

Do replies and reposts count toward the 3,200?

Yes. Replies and reposts are posts too, so they count toward the same 3,200.

How do I delete tweets older than my newest 3,200?

Download your X archive and give it to a tool that reads it. The archive lists every post with its ID, and a post can be deleted by ID whatever its age.

Does X's full-archive search get around the limit?

It can find older posts, but X bills apps for every post read, about $0.005 each, so finding 20,000 old posts would cost about $100 before deleting anything. The archive lists them for free.
