Guide
How to download your X archive
Short answer
On x.com or in the X app, go to Settings and privacy › Your account › Download an archive of your data, confirm your password and the code X sends, and choose Request archive. X notifies you when it is ready, often a day or more later, and you download a .zip file with every post you have made.
Request and download it in five steps
Open the archive setting
On x.com or in the X app, go to Settings and privacy › Your account › Download an archive of your data.
Confirm it's you
Enter your password, then the verification code X sends to your email or phone.
Request the archive
Choose Request archive. X prepares it in the background.
Wait for X's notice
X notifies you when the archive is ready, by email and in the app. It can take a day or more.
Download the .zip
Go back to the same setting and choose Download archive. Keep the file somewhere safe: after you delete posts, it is your only copy.
What's inside
- Your archive.html. Open it in a browser to read and search your posts offline.
- A data folder. Your posts are in
tweets.js(tweet.jsin older archives), with files for your likes, direct messages and account details. - Media folders. The photos and videos you posted. They make up most of the file's size, which can run to gigabytes.
Keep it safe
The archive holds your direct messages and personal details. Store it like a password export, and don't upload the whole .zip to a service you don't trust. PrunePosts opens the .zip in your browser and uploads only the posts files; your messages, photos and videos stay on your computer.
What to do with it
Your archive is the only complete list of your posts, which is why tools need it to go past your newest 3,200. Delete old tweets with your archive.
Questions
How long does it take to get your X archive?
Usually a day or more. X prepares it in the background and notifies you when it is ready to download.
Can I download my X archive on my phone?
Yes. The same setting is in the X app under Settings and privacy › Your account › Download an archive of your data. The file is large, so a computer is easier for opening it.
Does downloading my archive delete anything?
No. It only makes a copy. Your posts stay on X until you delete them.
Why do tweet deletion tools ask for my archive?
Because X's API lists only your newest 3,200 posts. The archive lists every post you have made, so a tool can find and delete the older ones.
